Choosing Your Wedding Flowers

Weddings are such beautiful celebrations of love and life. Traditionally, the bride carries a bouquet of flowers down the aisle and the church is decorated with flowers. Flowers are symbolic of the spirit of the occasion and most generally stand for love, peace and happiness.

Weddings take a great deal of planning and thought. Similar to other aspects such as the colors, invitations, guests, flower girl, maid of honor, best man, bridesmaid, church and others, the flowers are a very important aspect of the wedding.

The choice of flowers can be somewhat overwhelming. There are so many beautiful flowers and bouquet ideas, how do you choose? Take one step at a time. If you are planning a wedding, you not only need to select a bouquet for you, but flowers for the brides maids, maid of honor, church and reception. You may also want to think about the containers you will be placing the flowers in at the reception on the guests and bridal table.

If you are unsure as to the variety of options, you may want to contact a florist who would be an expert on flowers and weddings and could give you some helpful suggestions. Plan ahead. Most florists will be busy during the peak seasons, so plan ahead. It is recommended that you contact a florist approximately 6 months advance for a quote.

If you are unsure what florist you want to use. It is best to contact them in advance and let them know that you are shopping around for estimates and would like to meet with them briefly to get some ideas and price quotes. The florist will want to know your budget, so they have a general idea how much money they have to work with.

To help you generate ideas, you may want to look in magazines and clip pictures of flowers that you like. Or, think about past events, does your mother have a favorite flower? Think back to your childhood and if your family had a garden, what was the favorite flower? Think about what flowers, you do not particularly like or colors, that are not your favorites. Think about the season. Is the wedding taking place in the Spring, Summer or fall?

Most generally it is recommended that fall weddings have earth tone colors and flowers such as ochre, orange and rust. Winter colors are silver, gold and red. Think Spring and think pastels, pink, blue and yellow. If you are planning a summer wedding think bold colors such as beach colors, bright orange, green and citrus colors such as yellow and strawberry red.

Think about your particular personality or style. Are you artsy, athletic, classic, more of a gypsy or glamorous? Consider your particular personality when choosing flowers.
